We are D. Kyle Stearns Contracting and we do Autumn Lawn Care. Here in southern New England we are blessed with a temperate climate and four seasons. When we prepare now for our spring lawn and gardens, our plants get off to a good start once the warm weather returns. Why not have D. Kyle Stearns Contracting handle some of the chores you should be performing in autumn, from fall garden care and lawn work to winterizing trees and shrubs. There are a few essential tasks that will improve the health of your lawn next year. Broadleaf weeds in your lawn compete for water and nutrients and should be removed. When is the last time your soil pH was tested? Excess acidity needs to be corrected with an application of lime. If your soil is too alkaline, apply sulfur.  Soil pH correction is a process that takes time, so be sure to take care of it over winter.

Everyone knows that leaves on the grass have to be raked up and removed. Raking the leaves off your lawn is part of the winterizing processes for lawns. Vigorous raking, rather than leaf-blowing, can dethatch your lawn. Almost every lawn needs dethatching about once a year, or whenever the thatch reaches a thickness of about 1/2 inch. To check, just work your fingers into the grass and note the depth of the thatch layer. Controlling thatch is one of the most important – and most overlooked – parts of lawn care. Thatch is simply the layer of dead grass, roots, and debris that accumulates between the soil surface and the green grass blades above. Over time, thatch forms a thick mat, hindering water and air from reaching the soil. Thatch buildup creates an environment that can encourage pests and diseases. Dethatching can help prevent these problems.

Another essential chore is aeration, or punching holes into the lawn to allow moisture and nutrients to penetrate the soil. Hand aeration is tedious and time consuming if you have a large lawn. As a landscaping contractor, Kyle will be able to evaluate your yard and perform all the lawn winterizing tasks for you. Give us a call today for a consultation: 860-450-1592.
